Nardò, SenayanTalks — A groundbreaking innovation in tire technology has set a new milestone for electric vehicles. The newly developed MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 energy tires enabled the Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT GT XX to complete an extraordinary challenge at the Nardò Technical Center in Southern Italy: covering 40,075 kilometers—the circumference of the Earth—in less than eight days at a constant speed of 300 km/h.

This achievement highlights that tires are no longer just a supporting component. They have become a key enabler of efficiency, endurance, and performance in the era of electric mobility.

Efficiency meets endurance

Developed over five years with advanced dynamic vehicle-tire simulation, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 energy introduces an innovative dual-compound tread never seen before in commercial tires:

  • Energy Passive Compound (outer tread): reduces energy consumption.
  • Adaptive Grip Compound (center tread): maximizes traction on both dry and wet surfaces.

The result is a tire that delivers high energy efficiency, fewer charging stops, and consistent performance from the first kilometer to the last, even under extreme high-speed conditions.

“Driving around the world in less than eight days proves the potential of Michelin’s next-generation tire: stable performance, exceptional energy efficiency, and outstanding endurance,” said Serge Lafon, President of Michelin’s Automotive Original Equipment Division.

RFID integration

Beyond tread innovation, the tires—sized 265/40 ZR20 (front) and 295/40 ZR20 (rear)—are equipped with RFID chips. This allows real-time monitoring of tire conditions, enabling engineers to optimize performance throughout the grueling endurance test.

While engineered specifically for the Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT GT XX, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 energy is more than just a prototype. It serves as the foundation for Michelin’s upcoming commercial tire line, set to launch in 2026.

“Every innovation we validate in extreme testing environments like this feeds directly into future consumer products. Racing and endurance challenges are catalysts that accelerate sustainable mobility solutions,” Lafon added.

Endurance without compromise

To achieve this record, Michelin deployed a dedicated team of engineers and technicians 24/7 at the 12.6 km Nardò circuit, which features banked corners of up to 22.5 degrees. Two tire fitting crews worked in shifts around the clock to support the nonstop run.

The success demonstrates that the future of EV endurance and efficiency will be shaped as much by tire technology as by vehicle powertrains. The MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 energy has proven itself as a tire that is not only tough and energy-efficient but also ready to redefine the standards of sustainable high-performance driving.
